White-throated Dipper

Cinclus cinclus

The White-throated Dipper is Europe's only truly aquatic songbird, plunging into fast-flowing streams to walk along riverbeds hunting aquatic insects and larvae. Compact and brown with a bright white bib, it bobs constantly on streamside rocks. Special adaptations include a nictitating membrane and dense waterproof plumage.

Fun Fact

Dippers are the only songbirds that can swim and walk underwater to find food.
