Common Kingfisher

A jewel of European and Asian waterways, the Common Kingfisher dazzles with electric blue upperparts and warm orange underparts. Small but stocky, it perches motionless above streams before plunging headfirst to catch fish. Its rapid, low flight over water accompanied by a shrill whistle often draws attention before its brilliant colors register.
