Sunbittern
Eurypyga helias
When a Sunbittern spreads its wings, hidden eyespots of gold, chestnut, and black erupt in a dramatic sunburst display meant to startle predators. This elegant, heron-like bird inhabits forested streams and rivers from southern Mexico to Bolivia. It stalks the water's edge with slow, deliberate steps, hunting fish, frogs, and insects.
Fun Fact
When threatened, the Sunbittern spreads its wings to reveal dramatic eyespot patterns.
