Eurasian Bittern

Eurasian Bittern

Botaurus stellaris

A master of disguise, the Eurasian Bittern freezes with its bill pointed skyward, perfectly mimicking the surrounding reeds of its wetland home. Streaky brown plumage completes the camouflage. Found across Europe and Asia, the male's deep, resonant booming call during breeding season can be heard up to three miles away.

Fun Fact

When threatened, the Bittern points its bill skyward and sways like a reed to blend in.
