Reddish Egret

Reddish Egret

Egretta rufescens

The clown of the heron world, the Reddish Egret hunts by dashing, spinning, and spreading its wings to create shade that attracts fish — a technique called canopy feeding. Found along Gulf Coast and Caribbean shorelines, it comes in both a dark reddish-brown morph and a white morph. Its shaggy neck plumes add to the disheveled charm.

Fun Fact

Reddish Egrets hunt with a wild, drunken-looking dance — lurching, staggering, and spreading their wings to create shadows that help them spot fish.
