Great Egret
Ardea alba
Tall, slender, and entirely white with a long yellow bill and black legs, the Great Egret is a picture of elegance along shores and wetlands worldwide. During breeding season, it grows spectacular long plumes called aigrettes that trail past the tail. These feathers nearly drove the species to extinction during the hat-plume trade of the late 1800s.
Fun Fact
The Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society, which was founded to protect it from hat makers.
