Great Blue Heron
Ardea herodias
Standing up to four feet tall with a wingspan exceeding six feet, the Great Blue Heron is North America's largest heron. Its blue-gray plumage, long S-curved neck, and dagger-like bill make it a striking presence along shorelines and marshes. Patient and still, it strikes at fish with lightning speed.
Fun Fact
Great Blue Herons can swallow fish much wider than their narrow neck by using special vertebrae.
