American Flamingo
Phoenicopterus ruber
Tall and vivid pink with long legs and a distinctively curved bill, the American Flamingo is a spectacle in shallow coastal lagoons. Found in the Caribbean, Mexico, and the Galapagos, it gets its color from carotenoid pigments in its crustacean diet. They feed with their heads upside down, filtering water through comb-like structures.
Fun Fact
Flamingos are born gray or white and turn pink from eating shrimp and algae.
