American White Ibis
Eudocimus albus
The American White Ibis is an elegant wading bird with bright white plumage, a curved red-orange bill, and matching facial skin. Common in wetlands and coastal areas across the southeastern United States and into Central America, it probes soft mud for crabs and crayfish. Large flocks flying in V-formation are a familiar sight in Florida.
Fun Fact
The White Ibis is the mascot of the University of Miami because it's the last bird to seek shelter before a hurricane.
