Spotted Towhee
Pipilo maculatus
Rustling noisily through leaf litter with its distinctive two-footed backward hop, the Spotted Towhee is a large, handsome sparrow of western North America. Males show bold black upperparts peppered with white spots, rufous flanks, and a red eye. Its buzzy "drink-your-tea" song rings out from dense shrubby thickets.
