Southern Ground Hornbill

Bucorvus leadbeateri

Africa's largest hornbill is an imposing, turkey-sized bird with jet-black plumage and vivid red facial skin. Found in savannas and grasslands south of the Sahara, it stalks the ground in family groups hunting snakes, tortoises, and large insects. Its booming dawn calls carry for miles across the bushveld.

Fun Fact

Ground Hornbills are cooperative breeders and can live over 70 years in the wild.
