Snail Kite
Rostrhamus sociabilis
A dietary specialist of the highest order, the Snail Kite feeds almost exclusively on apple snails, using its deeply hooked bill to extract them from their shells. Dark slate-grey with red eyes and orange legs, it glides low over freshwater marshes of Florida and Latin America. Its fate is tied directly to wetland health.
