Plains-wanderer
Pedionomus torquatus
Critically endangered and extraordinarily cryptic, the Plains-wanderer resembles a quail but belongs to its own ancient family. It hides in sparse native grasslands of inland southeastern Australia. Unusually, the brighter-colored female is the showier sex, leaving the male to incubate eggs and raise chicks alone in their fragile grassland habitat.
Fun Fact
Fewer than 1,000 Plains-wanderers remain and the female is more colorful than the male.
