Northern Lapwing
Vanellus vanellus
With its wispy upturned crest, iridescent green-and-purple upperparts, and broad rounded wings, the Northern Lapwing is one of Europe's most distinctive shorebirds. It breeds across farmlands and wet meadows from Britain to China. Known for dramatic tumbling aerial displays in spring, it fiercely dive-bombs any intruder near its ground nest.
Fun Fact
Northern Lapwings perform wild tumbling aerial displays during breeding season, throwing themselves around the sky like feathered stunt pilots.
