Killdeer
Charadrius vociferus
A medium-sized plover with brown upperparts and two bold black breast bands, the Killdeer is one of the most recognizable shorebirds despite spending most of its time far from shore. Common across North America in fields, parking lots, and gravel roofs, it performs a dramatic broken-wing display to lure predators away from its ground nest.
