Northern Jacana
Jacana spinosa
Known as the "Jesus bird" for its ability to walk on floating lily pads, the Northern Jacana has extraordinarily long toes that distribute its weight across aquatic vegetation. Its chestnut body, black head, and bright yellow bill and forehead shield are distinctive. Found from Mexico to Panama, it practices polyandry — females mate with multiple males who incubate the eggs.
Fun Fact
Jacanas have enormously long toes that let them walk on lily pads, earning the nickname 'Jesus bird.'
