Wattled Jacana

Jacana jacana

Walking effortlessly across floating lily pads on absurdly long toes, the Wattled Jacana is a striking wetland bird of Central and South America. Adults display glossy chestnut plumage, a black head, and a red frontal wattle. In a role reversal, females are larger and polyandrous while males handle all incubation duties.

Fun Fact

Wattled Jacana males carry chicks under their wings, with just the babies' legs visible.
