Strigops habroptila
The Kakapo is the world's only flightless, nocturnal parrot — and one of its rarest birds. This large, moss-green New Zealand native has a round face, whisker-like facial feathers, and a musty-sweet scent. With intensive conservation efforts, its population has slowly climbed from just 51 individuals in 1995 to over 200 today.
