Great Grey Owl
Strix nebulosa
The Great Grey Owl is the tallest owl in North America, with a massive rounded head, piercing yellow eyes, and concentric grey facial discs. Despite its imposing size, much of its bulk is fluffy feathers — it weighs less than a Great Horned Owl. It hunts rodents by sound alone, plunging through deep snow in boreal forests across the Northern Hemisphere.
Fun Fact
Despite being the tallest owl, the Great Grey Owl weighs less than the Snowy Owl — most of its size is feathers.
