California Condor
Gymnogyps californianus
With a wingspan reaching nearly three meters, the California Condor is North America's largest flying bird. Its black plumage, bald orange-red head, and white wing patches are distinctive. Brought back from the brink of extinction through captive breeding, it now soars once more over canyons in California, Arizona, and Baja California.
Fun Fact
California Condors were down to just 22 birds in 1987 but have been brought back to over 500 through captive breeding.
