The Northern Bald Ibis is an unmistakable bird with a bald red head, long curved bill, and glossy black plumage with iridescent green and purple sheens. Once widespread across Europe and North Africa, it is now critically endangered with small wild populations in Morocco and Syria. Colonies nest on cliff ledges and forage for insects in dry grasslands.
