Brown Pelican
Pelecanus occidentalis
A stocky seabird with a huge bill and throat pouch, the Brown Pelican is the only pelican species that plunge-dives from the air to catch fish. Found along Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the Americas, it was once devastated by DDT but has made a remarkable comeback. Groups often fly in elegant single-file lines just above the wave tops.
Fun Fact
Brown Pelicans dive from heights of 60 feet, hitting the water at 40 mph to catch fish.
