American Goldfinch

Spinus tristis

Bright canary-yellow with jet-black wings and forehead, the male American Goldfinch in breeding plumage is a flash of sunshine at backyard feeders. Found across North America, it frequents weedy fields and gardens where it feeds on seeds. Unusually among songbirds, it delays nesting until midsummer when thistle and other seeds are most abundant.

Fun Fact

American Goldfinches are strict vegetarians and one of the latest nesting birds in North America.
