Eurasian Jay
Garrulus glandarius
A flash of electric blue wing patches gives away the otherwise pinkish-brown Eurasian Jay as it darts through European and Asian woodlands. It is an accomplished mimic, imitating other birds and even mechanical sounds. Each autumn it buries thousands of acorns, and the ones it forgets help regenerate oak forests across its range.
Fun Fact
Eurasian Jays cache thousands of acorns each autumn and remember most of their hiding spots — the ones they forget often sprout into new oak trees.
